Aesthetics

A few weeks ago I got very enthusiastic about the documentary “BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Alchemists of Sound”. (You can find a sliced up version of this on YouTube if you search on “alchemists of sound”.)

After showing it to Sue, she asked a very important question: in writing the music they were writing, were they striving for strangeness, or did it just happen to sound strange?

I have no easy answer for this. The techniques and technologies being used imposed a certain strange quality on the music produced, but whether this was sought out or deliberately exaggerated is another matter.

Any thoughts?
